PostgreSQL for Application Developers: Why It Became the Default
PostgreSQL has become the go-to database for startups and enterprises alike. It's open source, reliable, and handles workloads that once needed several different databases.
What developers love
- Rich SQL: CTEs, window functions,
UPSERT,RETURNING, lateral joins. - JSONB: store and index flexible documents next to relational data.
- Extensions: pgvector for AI embeddings, PostGIS for maps, pg_trgm for fuzzy search, TimescaleDB for time series.
- Correctness: transactional DDL (roll back a failed migration), strict constraints and solid concurrency control (MVCC).
- Everywhere: every cloud offers managed Postgres, plus many serverless and developer-focused providers.
A few features in action
-- Insert or update in one statement, and get the row back
INSERT INTO inventory (sku, qty) VALUES ('MUG-01', 10)
ON CONFLICT (sku) DO UPDATE SET qty = inventory.qty + EXCLUDED.qty
RETURNING sku, qty;
-- Query JSON
SELECT id, payload->>'event' AS event
FROM webhooks
WHERE payload @> '{"status": "failed"}';
-- Generated identity columns and checks
CREATE TABLE orders (
id BIGINT GENERATED ALWAYS AS IDENTITY PRIMARY KEY,
total_paise INTEGER NOT NULL CHECK (total_paise >= 0),
status TEXT NOT NULL DEFAULT 'pending',
created_at TIMESTAMPTZ NOT NULL DEFAULT now()
);
"Just use Postgres"
Before adding a separate search engine, queue, cache or vector database, check whether Postgres can do the job well enough. Full-text search, SKIP LOCKED job queues, JSONB and pgvector cover many needs at small to medium scale, with one system to back up, secure and operate.
Habits for success
- Use
TIMESTAMPTZ, notTIMESTAMP, for points in time. - Add indexes for your real query patterns, and check plans with
EXPLAIN ANALYZE. - Use a connection pool; Postgres connections are relatively expensive.
- Manage schema changes with migrations in version control.
